The Department of Exercise Science offers four degree programs.
The Major in Exercise Science provides knowledge and practical application relevant to career opportunities in health, fitness and wellness promotion and programming. You will be made aware of the role of physical activity within the health care delivery system. You will study health risk factors and lifestyle management techniques to promote a healthy and active lifestyle. You will learn how to administer protocols commonly used to assess health and performance including cardiopulmonary and metabolic tests, body composition, flexibility, muscle strength, agility, balance, coordination, speed, power, and reaction time. You will be versed in the areas of education and counselling with respect to fitness, health and performance. You will learn how to develop and administer exercise prescriptions and programs.
The Specialization in Exercise Science – Clinical Exercise Physiology Option addresses the physical activity needs of special populations. If you have an appreciation for persons with a disability or chronic disease condition, their lifestyle, and their exercise possibilities, you will find this program of interest. You will learn about the health care delivery system and its implications for the field of the adapted and therapeutic physical activity. You will become aware of the team concept for the delivery of services to special populations. You will learn how to adapt traditional exercise forms, assessment techniques and training protocols to meet the needs of persons with physical and sensory impairments as well as chronic disease.
The Specialization in Exercise Science – Athletic Therapy Option addresses the knowledge and practical skills required to pursue careers devoted to the health care of the active community through to the high performance athlete by utilizing various techniques in injury prevention, emergency services, and rehabilitation techniques. Your educational experience will include foundations in human anatomy, exercise physiology, biomechanics, and nutrition as well as musculoskeletal and postural evaluation, equipment fitting and selection, conditioning programs, techniques in prophylactic and supportive taping and wrapping, injury assessment, basic and advanced emergency life support and first aid, preparation of the injured individual for entrance into the appropriate health care delivery system, rehabilitative techniques, therapeutic modalities, and utilization of techniques facilitating a safe return to participation.

The BSc Specialization in Exercise Science/Athletic Therapy is accredited by the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) and is directed toward the preparation of students seeking to become a Certified Athletic Therapist in Canada (C.A.T.[C]).
The BSc Honours in Exercise Science offers additional courses providing research training in a variety of applied-science and health areas. Students graduating from the BSc Honours program will possess an academic background compatible with the entry requirements for the majority of graduate schools. Students must meet the University regulations concerning the Honours degree (§16.2.3).
